Flexible Flyer Sled

Flexible Flyer Sled

by Mike Pitzer, 2019

Growing up in Algonac, Michigan, you either got skates or hockey stuff for Christmas. Unless you were part of a big family, then you got a group present. I’m not really sure how we ended up with the sled, but we had tons of fun laying on it and pulling ourselves along the frozen St. Clair River using screwdrivers to get us going under all of the docks. It was probably a pretty foolish thing to do as the thickness of ice varied a lot around the dock spiles. One minute you’re zooming along — the next, you’re scrambling to get out of the freezing water while all the kids are laughing at you. By the time you walked home, you’d walk like a robot because your pants and jacket had frozen stiff. Yep, another fun, childhood memory that still makes me smile, and cringe, when I think of what we did as kids… and survived!
