Jar of Marbles No.1

Jar of Marbles No.1

by Mike Pitzer, 2022

As a kid growing up on the St. Clair River in Algonac, Michigan, it seemed like everyone had their little bag or Maxwell House 2-lbs can of marbles. Myself, I used a mason jar. I still have these sitting on my studio shelf taunting me to draw them. Earlier this year (2022), I finally felt I had to give it a go. This was my first attempt at marbles in a jar on Canson paper which has a bit of a tooth to it, unlike the other paper I’m use to drawing on. I think it brings a bit of softness to the detail in my images.

The last detail photo is from my first backyard meeting with the Pasadena Society of Artists in Pasadena.  I’m laughing because we were talking about artwork with crazy detail…like this jar of marbles I’ve been working on. The timing was so funny.
